The Index Book

I tried to explain the concept of the index book to a friend of mine back home.
At first he started laughing and then he said: "You know, I went to Russia once and they have a similar system there for public stuff. All in writing and the double that with more writing. I think it's a communist thing".

So, what is the index?
It's a black book for which:

  • At the end of the semester, the students will stand in line at the secretariat to pick up this book with the student's name on it (it's a pretty nice looking book - leather-bound and all).
  • Each subject has been hand-written (by the student) and this book needs to be brough to every exam
  • At the end of the exam, the student must leave his or her index book in the department in which the exam was performed.
The record (for me) so far has been to wait OVER TWO WEEKS for the book to be signed by the department head
  • After every single grade and department head signature is in the book, the student will have to go back to the secretariat, where the index book is kept until after the semester break.
  • When a new exam period arrives, the student will have to repeat steps mentioned above.

Years ago the university introduced a web-based intranet called Neptun.
This is a very good system that allows the students to sign up for classes and exams.
The grades are updated in the Neptun system as soon as the student is given the exam in his or her index.
