My sixth year 2008/09

I am currently in the fifth year, but since I am going to do the sixth year abroad I have to prepare everything (and have it ready in the fifth year!!).
The school has been HORRIBLE at giving us information about the sixth year.

The sixth year consists of nine subjects done in a block-system with an exam after each subject.
Once the student passes all his rotations there is a Hungarian medical state exam.

The subjects are:

  • Internal Medicine - 9 weeks
  • Surgery - 9 weeks (of which 2 are traumatology)
  • Pediatrics - 8 weeks (of which 2 have to be done at Semmelweis University)
  • Ob/Gyn - 6 weeks
  • Psychiatry - 4 weeks
  • Neurology - 4 weeks (have to be done at Semmelweis University)
  • Family medicine - 2 weeks
  • Pre-hospital medicine - 2 weeks

QUESTIONS

I have so many unanswered questions.
My university is horrible at giving out clear information about the sixth year. Most of my information is from former sixth year students, but I want to make sure I get all my questions answered by the university before I start the sixth year, because I won't have time to fix problems once I start.

I have collected questions here, and answers I have found:

The Department of Neurology has early rotations. When are they and who gets to do it?
Source: Tutor Department of Neurology + Message on Neptun; April 2008

Announced by the Department of Neurology through the Neptun system and I spoke with my own teacher, who is also the tutor (Dr A. Kamondi):
The exam is going to be on May 8th 2008 (during lecture).
Those students that get the best result (they have not confirmed the number, but Kamondi said "about 25") are given the option to do the early rotation.
If any of the top students decline this opportunity, then the next student on the list is offered it, and so on.

There are two early rotations:
The first starts May 19th 2008
The second starts June 9th 2008

Is there an early rotation in Pediatrics?
Source: Message from ISAS after meeting with Departments of Pediatrics; April 2008

No.
This was not accepted by the tutor of the 1st Department of Pediatrics (Dr E. Horvath).

What does the Department of Family medicine require?
Source: Announced during lecture on March 31st

2 weeks (2 x 5 days) of in-patient care.
If possible, the student should accompany the doctor(s) on house-visits, but this is not required.
The student need to write down basic information about three cases for each day (basic info about three patients they had during the day).
In addition an in-depth write-up about the most interesting case during the Family medicine rotation (just one).

Finally, the doctor in charge of the Family medicine rotation (the doctor abroad that is responsible for the student) has to make an evaluation and this decides the grade that the student gets for the rotation!!

More information will be email to the students as soon as possible.

How much is the tuition fee for the sixth year?
Source: Calendar for academic year 2003/2004; English Secretariat

For students that started the first year in 2003/2004, the sixth year costs USD 10,560.
I have been told again and again that the calendar when we started is our "contract" with the school.
It dictates how much we are suppose to pay for each year, because tuition goes up almost every year.

According to the calendar of 2003/2004, we are suppose to pay the entire sum (USD 10,560) in a single sum by July 15th.
AND it says that we get 25% off our tuition fee, NOT 20% as it says in the calendar for 2007/2008.

UPDATE! According to the English Secretariat we will only get 20% refunded. This because we are required to do more weeks in Budapest now than before.

How is the tuition paid for the sixth year? In two parts or one sum? Do we pay everything and then get money back?
Source: English Secretariat; ; Answered April 9th 2008

From the Secretariat:
Students who only complete the compulsory 6 weeks (two weeks of Pediatrics and one week of Neurology) in Hungary can ask for 20% reduction of their tuition fee. If the tuition fee is paid in one sum, the reduction will be made in July. In case of paying in two parts , the reduction will be made from the 2nd part.

We are in other words allowed to choose if we pay it in two parts or in one sum, but I have not gotten it confirmed if we need to apply in order to split the sum! (ANSWERED BELOW!)

When do we register for the 6th year on the Neptun system? Do we have to register for the 6th year on the Neptun system?
Source: English Secretariat ; Answered April 9th 2008

From the Secretariat:
You have to sign up for all 6th year subjects in the Neptun as before. In case of each subject, you sign up for the rotation as well as for the final exam.
You can schedule your exams individually, using the exam dates on the Neptun, from the fixed programs. In this way you can complete several rotations first, than come to Budapest for their exams. In that case the total weeks of the rotations should be certified.
If the exam dates announced in the Neptun are not good for you, you have to ask the departments for the possibility to give you an extra date. The English Secretariat cannot help you concerning extra rotation periods or extra exam dates.

The last week of each rotation is said to be for study and exam. How can I assure I get an exam date that week? Are all exams on the Neptun system?
Source: English Secretariat; Answered April 9th 2008

From the Secretariat:
Final exams are either in the last week of the rotation or during the week after. Please note that you are only entitled to pass the final exam in the last week of the rotation if you have a permission (=valid exam application NEPTUN) to do so. In this case and only in this case its enough for the hospital to certify a week less of the rotation.
If the exam dates announced in the Neptun are not good for you, you have to ask the departments for the possibility to give you an extra date. The English Secretariat cannot help you concerning extra rotation periods or extra exam dates.

Are there any special rules for Israeli students doing their rotation in Israel?
Source: English Secretariat; Answered April 9th 2008

From the Secretariat:
Israeli students have to have the Dean s signature on all certificates issued by hospitals affiliated to Ben-Gurion, Technion, The Hebrew and Tel-Aviv Universities . Tel Hashomer Hospital is an exception, there the Director of the Hospital has to sign instead of the Dean. However, if Tel-Aviv University insists that you register through them, you have to do it, as per the agreement between our Dean Prof. István Karádi and the Israeli Deans.
Semmelweis University reserves the right to accept a certificate or refuse it in justified cases. Students have to present these handbooks to the concerned departments. After the departments have accepted them, students have to retain the originals and hand them in at the English Secretariat (while keeping a copy).

Do we have to have permission to pay the tuition in parts for the sixth year?
Source: English Secretariat; Answered April 15th 2008

From the Secretariat:
- who can not pay the whole tuition fee in one sum could pay in two parts, in which case the
first part will be due in July and the second by the end of December.

I understand this as: You do not need a special permition to pay in two parts. It is simply a question of preference!

When do we have to have our papers in for the rotations abroad?
Source: English Secretariat; Answered April 15th 2008

From the Secretariat:
- if you do your the rotations outside Hungary, you have to hand it in the letter(s) of
acceptance detailing rotations/weeks from the foreign place(s) before you start your rotation
to the heads of Semmelweis Departments.

Could this be more vague? I guess you just have to hand in the papers before each individual rotation.

When are the state exams? What is the format? Is there a limitation to the number of students that can take the state exam each time?
Source: English Secretariat; Answered April 15th 2008

From the Secretariat:
- we have the state exam in June, August, November (middle of months) every year
there is no limit of students that can take the state each time

I THINK the format is multiple choice and oral part, but this has not been confirmed (but older students have said so).

When do we have to hand in the diploma work/thesis? What about those students that graduate later than Summer 2009?
Source: English Secretariat; Answered April 15th 2008

From the Secretariat:
- you need to complete all of your exams and defence your Thesis work before you sit for the
state exam
- of course if postpone your graduation from June to August or December you can take your
exams later also

Will all exam dates be posted on the Neptun system?
Source: English Secretariat; Answered April 15th 2008

From the Secretariat:
I hope you do not having any problem to use the new Neptun system and read the
messages. From next week the examination days will be on.
