Everything you need to know before you start the 6th year

This page covers the following (in this order):

  1. What are the subjects in the 6th year?
  2. Which subjects do I have exams in and when are these exams?
  3. When can I start doing the 6th year?
  4. Do I have to do it in a certain order?
  5. Which subjects can I do abroad and which subjects do I HAVE to do in Budapest?
  6. FOR NORWEGIANS: The Stavanger hospital program for the 6th year (in Norwegian)

What are the subjects in the 6th year?

The sixth year consists of eight subjects done in a block-system with an exam after each subject (no exam after Family medicine and Pre-hospital medicine)
Once the student passes all his rotations there is a Hungarian medical state exam.

The subjects are:

  • Internal Medicine - 9 weeks
  • Surgery - 9 weeks (of which 2 are traumatology)
  • Pediatrics - 8 weeks (of which 2 have to be done at Semmelweis University)
  • Ob/Gyn - 6 weeks
  • Psychiatry - 4 weeks
  • Neurology - 4 weeks (have to be done at Semmelweis University)
  • Family medicine - 2 weeks
  • Pre-hospital medicine - 2 weeks

Which subjects do I have exams in and when are these exams?

You will have an exam in the following subjects

  • Internal Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Pediatrics
  • Ob/Gyn
  • Psychiatry
  • Neurology

No exam in Family Medicine and no exam in Pre-hospital medicine.
The grade in Family Medicine is given to you by the clinic where you have your practice!! So Semmelweis University will use their evaluation to give you a mark.

When are these exams?
This is a tricky question, but I will try to make it simple:

ALL the exams are posted on the Neptun system.
The problem with the Neptun system is as follows:

  1. The University has FOUR ALTERNATIVES for the 6th year (four different orders you can do your rotations; but these are only suggestions, you can set it up the way you want, but remember that you cannot do Family Medicine at the end).
  2. The Neptun system uses these four alternatives to make four "groups"
  3. Based on when the rotation for each subject is within this group, the departments post an exam date in that period.
YES, it sounds complicated and it is!!!
  4. So in order to get for example Internal Medicine exam in January, you have to sign up to that group which has Internal Medicine as their SUGGESTION for January and then you will get the exam dates under "Exam registration".
  5. If you are not signed up in the correct group, you will not get the exam dates visible on your Neptun system.
  6. If everything else fails, contact the English Secretariat. We had Ms. Böhm to help us and she was GREAT!! Thank you, Ms. Böhm :-)

And what are these four suggestions???
They are found here: SUGGESTEDROTATION.PDF

When can I start doing the 6th year?

As soon as you finish the 5th year!
There is actually an early rotation in Neurology.
I've written a "blog entry" about it here: Articles

You can read more about it in the next topic.

Just remember: You HAVE to have gotten the rotation abroad approved by the department in Budapest before you leave the country to do the rotation!! If not they might not accept it when you get back and you're screwed!!

Do I have to do it in a certain order?

No, you can set it up the way you want it, but you cannot do Family Medicine as the last rotation (for some reason...)
And you do NOT have to do your exams in a certain order either. You can do several rotations and "save up" on the exams for later. This saves travel money back to Budapest:-) But it also puts pressure on you to study more than one subject at the time;-)

Which subjects can I do abroad and which subjects do I HAVE to do in Budapest?

You can do everything abroad except:

  • All 4 weeks of Neurology (have to be done at the Department of Neurology in Budapest)
  • 2 of the total 8 weeks of Pediatrics (so you do 6 weeks abroad and 2 weeks in Budapest. They DON'T have to be back-to-back)

The Stavanger hospital program for the 6th year
