My third year 2005/06 - Ethics, Sociology

We had these two subjects in one semester (half of the semester was ethics and the other half was sociology).
They were treated as two separate subjects, though, with a final grade for each.

Both of these topics are very straight forward, but important.

Ethics
This was probably the most interesting of these two subjects, because it allowed for some debate during class.
Usually our classroom discussions are limited to students answering questions from the teachers, such as "what is the therapy for..." or "how can you diagnose....", but in ethics the debate has been going on for centuries on topics like euthanasia and allocation of rare commodities.

I studied philosophy before I came to Budapest and I loved ethics, and it was very interesting to see how many different opinions there are when the student body is made up of people from all over the world.

Some of the topics we discussed in this subject:

  • Informed consent
  • Transplantation
  • Experiments on humans and animals
  • Euthanasia (terminating someone else's life)
  • Justice in the health care - who get's to receive treatment?

Sociology
This subject was more a discussion on the doctor-patient relationship and social aspects of medicine. Less discussion and more math :-)
At the end of the semester we had a written test (20 multiple choice questions), but they were all taken from class or the book.

You can find the topics discussed in these subjects in my notes --> MY NOTES
