My third year 2005/06 - Microbiology

My practice teacher was Dr Berek, who was also the coordinator of the program.
She is very thorough and her class notes are great. Although her midterms were harder than what other groups had, she prepared her group well for the exam. I didn't get a five in Microbiology, but several in my group did.

The first semester covers general microbiology and bacteriology.
The second semester covers viruses, parasites and fungi.

We also had a laboratory exam at the end of the second semester.
During my lab exam I got T.vaginalis in a smear and I also had to explain a few cultivating methods.

I believe the microbiology subject at Semmelweis is very detailed oriented and gives an excellent basis for the clinics. Doesn't matter which field you are going into, microbiology is so fundamental that you should make sure you don't have a single gap in your knowledge about the material covered during these two semesters.

The exam was detail oriented, also! You should know classifications, morphology, cultivation, how the organism causes disease, and treatment, along with laboratory and clinical practices.

The only thing I would like to put my finger on:
The last part of the second semester focuses on the clinical microbiology. That is, topics like "which microorganisms cause meningitis", "microorganisms in lung infections" etc.
I think a general overview of this in the beginning would be very helpful, but I understand that this is saved to the end, because we need to know the organisms before mixing the bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites into clinical symptoms. There is just not enough time to cover everything in detail and after the university cut the semester one week short, a lot of students will have a hard time finishing the microbiology curriculum in time.

Don't underestimate the amount of material in this subject!

My midterms are in My Notes.
